Our first visit to West Virginia was an extraordinaire trip. I met the Mountain Man and His wife and entered a new circle of friends and family. We arrived late in the evening and after the introductory excitement, a glass of wine and much talk we went to sleep in the beautiful mountain cabin. Getting to that cabin was almost like going back in time. Seeing the Mountain Man’s wife waiting on the porch for us to come in reminded me of when we visited my grandparents farm and she stood in the porch waiting for us to come up. It was a simple home full of all of the amenities one may find in a mountain home. Immediately I felt like home, the chemistry was right among us and the sharing of affection was in abundance.
Although it was the middle of the summer the evening was cool and the scent of country was in the air. We got up early in the morning to fresh eggs and beacon breakfast. The house was full!! The mountain man and his wife have plenty animals and they love each and every one of them equally. There were 3 dogs each one of them rescued from a local shelter and each with their own unique personalities: Maicy, Cooper and Wilson. Wilson captured the most our attention, he was so excited almost like a kid wanting to show his guest the beautiful playground the Mountain man’s property offered.
There was also a rooster. OMG this brought me back to my childhood when growing up in Puerto Rico the rooster would wake us up every morning. The rooster Rudy crow at 5:00 am, 9:00 am and almost every 3 hours thereafter. There was a family of raccoons the mountain man’s wife would feed every evening. It was an amazing picture to watch the mother and its 4 babies come to the yard and eat.
The most amazing part of the trip was that the cabin’s land is next to the National Forest. We went on an ATV tour through the mountain hills and water streams. It was scary at times going down the steep hill and knowing that if the Mountain Man made a mistake I would end up rolling down the hill!!! We saw wild animals and footprints of bears. It was a packed “gator” we had Wilson, our two miniature dashounds, my partner and the Mountain Man’s wife were in the back. I rode on the front seat and he drove. It was a fascinating trip in which we made new friends, adopted a new family and fell in love with the place that someday we will call home. As we toured the 20 plus acres of forest we stopped in one spot and instantly the land spoke to me. At that moment I knew that someday we will be living right in that very same spot!
